A remarkable Qing dynasty lacquer panel, intricately inlaid with jade and agate and depicting Taoist deities in a misty landscape, is one of thousands of treasured artefacts currently undergoing restoration in China. These ancient pieces, long kept in museum storage, are being carefully revived with the hope of eventually being displayed to both national and international audiences.
The panel, which comes from the rich collection of imperial treasures amassed over centuries, had deteriorated significantly over time. According to Sun Ou, a specialist in restoring inlaid lacquer artworks at the Forbidden City in Beijing, the damage was extensive. “The bottom layer had shifted and loosened to the point where it was in a pulverised state,” she explained. More than 100 delicate inserts had detached from the surface and required meticulous reinforcement to restore the piece to its original splendor.
This delicate and time-consuming restoration effort is part of a larger movement that has gained momentum over the last decade.
