When country music star Maren Morris first began voicing her support for the LGBTQ community, she believed she was doing so as an ally. What she didn’t fully realise at the time was that she was also beginning to speak up for herself. In a recent revelation, Morris shared that she is bisexual, a truth she has come to embrace after years of personal reflection and growth.
“I just maybe, internally, hadn’t had the bravery to go there in myself, and say the words out loud,” Morris said candidly. Coming out later in life, especially after years in heterosexual relationships, presented its own emotional complexity. “When you spend the majority of your life in straight relationships and you haven’t explored that part of yourself … is now the right time for me to tell everyone [that] while I’m married, ‘Hi, I’m also attracted to women’?” she reflected.
Morris, who has been a vocal supporter of social justice movements such as Black Lives Matter and immigrant rights, has undergone profound personal changes in recent years. Her divorce from fellow musician Ryan Hurd marked a significant turning point. These transformative experiences are woven throughout Dreamsicle, her fourth studio album, which is now available.
The album reflects a new depth and vulnerability, revealing a more mature, introspective side of the Grammy-winning artist. Morris describes Dreamsicle as a project born out of freedom and emotional clarity. “There’s a freedom that I’ve found in this album that’s a new version of what I thought I had,” she explained. “It’s just more wise and lived in. And maybe part of that’s just like being in your thirties – you just don’t care as much.”
Through her music and her personal openness, Morris is redefining what it means to be an artist in the country genre—long seen as conservative and traditional. Her willingness to share her truth, both through her songs and her identity, marks a significant moment not only in her career but also in the broader landscape of country music. Dreamsicle stands as a testament to the beauty of self-discovery and the courage it takes to live authentically, even in the public eye.
