Russia paid a solemn tribute to ballet legend Yuri Grigorovich on Friday at the Bolshoi Theatre, where he served as artistic director for many decades. Grigorovich, widely regarded as one of the most influential choreographers of the 20th century, passed away on Monday at the age of 98. The Bolshoi, a symbol of Russia’s rich ballet tradition, became the focal point for admirers from across the arts community who gathered to honor his legacy.

Inside the ornate auditorium, prominent figures from Russia’s cultural sphere assembled to bid farewell. Grigorovich’s coffin was placed in front of the stage, beneath a large photograph capturing the choreographer’s distinctive white hair and mischievous smile. Outside the theatre in central Moscow, hundreds of citizens gathered, many holding flowers, waiting in respectful silence. As his casket was carried down the steps, the crowd applauded, accompanied by a portrait of Grigorovich and three massive floral wreaths, reflecting the deep affection and respect held for the ballet master.

Among those attending was Alexandra Tretyakova, a pensioner who expressed her admiration for Grigorovich, calling him a genius she could not miss saying goodbye to. His remarkable career included iconic productions such as Spartacus, Ivan the Terrible, and Romeo and Juliet. Grigorovich was especially renowned for choreographing demanding male roles that showcased extraordinary strength and technical skill, setting a high bar in the world of ballet.

Ballerina Lyubov Filippova described Grigorovich as a “colossus” and an idol whose influence would endure long after his passing. She emphasized that his work would remain alive in their hearts and lives, encouraging future generations to continue learning from his timeless ballets. Grigorovich’s legacy is marked by his profound impact on ballet not only in Russia but internationally, shaping the art form with his visionary style and rigorous approach.

The tribute at the Bolshoi Theatre highlighted the immense respect and admiration Grigorovich commanded throughout his life. His contributions helped elevate Russian ballet to global prominence, and his memory will remain a guiding light for dancers and choreographers worldwide. As Russia mourns the loss of this artistic titan, it also celebrates a life dedicated to the beauty and power of dance.
