Jockey Zac Purton is placing high hopes on the five-year-old Lucky Sweynesse as they prepare for the Group Two BOCHK Private Banking Jockey Club Sprint (1,200m) at Sha Tin. Despite a less than ideal start to the season, Purton is confident that improved fitness, favorable weight conditions, and a suitable racing surface will help Lucky Sweynesse reclaim his status in the sprinting field.
Lucky Sweynesse, who had been a favorite in his previous two runs this season, faced challenges that didn’t play to his strengths. In his season-opening race at the Class One HKSAR Chief Executive’s Cup (1,200m), he carried a significant weight disadvantage, finishing second on a yielding track. In his subsequent race, the Group Two Premier Bowl (1,200m), Lucky Sweynesse carried a similar weight and performed admirably, though he was narrowly beaten by Sight Success.
Reflecting on these performances, Purton acknowledges the challenges faced by Lucky Sweynesse. “He struck a wet track first up carrying a big weight, which didn’t suit him, but he still ran well,” he said. “Last time in the Premier Bowl, he ran a really good race. It was just the handicap conditions of the race and the fact that he’s still coming up to peak, which got the better of him.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s race, Purton is optimistic, noting that the set weights and penalties format is more favorable for Lucky Sweynesse. The sprinter will be conceding five pounds to competitors like Sight Success and Victor The Winner, but Purton believes that Lucky Sweynesse is nearing his peak condition. “I’m happy with where he’s at,” Purton added.
In addition to his ride on Lucky Sweynesse, Purton has a full slate of 10 rides at Sha Tin, including partnering with Beauty Eternal in the Group Two BOCHK Private Wealth Jockey Club Mile (1,600m). Despite a strong showing in the Group Two Sha Tin Trophy (1,600m), Beauty Eternal couldn’t surpass the leader, California Spangle. However, following two impressive barrier trial wins at Sha Tin, Purton is hopeful about Beauty Eternal’s chances in the upcoming race.
Purton’s confidence in his mounts reflects his deep understanding of horse racing dynamics and his ability to assess and adapt to varying race conditions. As the Jockey Club Sprint approaches, all eyes will be on Lucky Sweynesse and Beauty Eternal to see if they can live up to their potential under Purton’s skilled guidance.
