Unveiling China’s Mega Bozi-Dabei Ultra-Deep Gas Field: A New Energy Era

BusinessTechnologyUnveiling China's Mega Bozi-Dabei Ultra-Deep Gas Field: A New Energy Era

In a monumental step towards enhancing its energy resources, China has officially inaugurated its largest ultra-deep condensate gas field, situated in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The operational commencement of the Bozi-Dabei field marks the commencement of an exciting new chapter in China’s energy sector. PetroChina, the operator of this colossal gas reservoir, heralds this achievement as a critical milestone. The endeavor, which began construction in July 2022, is set to propel China’s gas production capacity into a new era of large-scale development. The Bozi-Dabei ultra-deep gas area is now the second trillion-cubic-meter scale gas field in the region, next only to the Kela-Keshen gas field. The commencement of operations in this newly completed project promises to provide a stable source of gas supply through China’s expansive west-east gas transmission network.

A Vision Realized: Construction and Infrastructure

The Bozi-Dabei ultra-deep gas project represents a visionary endeavor in China’s relentless pursuit of energy self-sufficiency. This undertaking has been years in the making, with official construction activities kicking off in July 2022. To enable the efficient extraction and transmission of gas, several critical components have been put in place. PetroChina has invested in a new natural gas treatment plant, a condensate stabilizer, and an extensive network of oil and gas pipelines, forming the cornerstone of this ambitious project. The most significant achievement, however, is the substantial boost in the annual gas transmission capacity, which has increased from 5 billion to an impressive 12 billion cubic meters.

Wang Zhaohui, a senior expert at the Production Capacity Building Department under the PetroChina Tarim Oilfield, underscored the significance of these developments. “We’ve built a new natural gas treatment plant, a condensate stabilizer and oil and gas pipelines, which are the three major projects of the field, with the annual gas transmission capacity increasing from 5 billion to 12 billion cubic meters,” he stated.

Production Potential: Drilling and Output Expectations

The Bozi-Dabei ultra-deep gas field is a testament to human ingenuity and technological advancement, boasting over 100 deep wells. These wells are strategically placed in the region and are expected to yield over 9 billion cubic meters of gas condensate and more than 600,000 tonnes of condensate oil this year, as projected by the company. Such output figures are bound to have a significant impact on the energy landscape in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, as well as the broader national energy market.

“We can provide gas supply for over 20 million households every day,” stated Li Zhiming, the head of the Bozi-Dabei Management Area under the PetroChina Tarim Oilfield. This statement reflects the substantial impact this project will have on improving the quality of life for a vast population, thanks to the reliable and abundant gas supply.

A Versatile Resource: The Significance of Gas Condensate

Gas condensate, also known as natural gasoline or Natural Gas Liquids (NGL), is a valuable petrochemical raw material in high demand in China. This hydrocarbon mixture holds critical importance in various industrial processes, including the production of petrochemicals and as a fuel source. Remarkably, more than 80 percent of China’s proven gas condensate reserves are situated in the Tarim Basin, at depths of seven to eight kilometers below the Earth’s surface. This colossal deposit positions China as a major player in the global energy sector, as it seeks to diversify its energy resources and reduce its reliance on traditional fossil fuels.

The Bozi-Dabei ultra-deep condensate gas field stands as a testament to China’s unwavering commitment to securing its energy future. With the commencement of operations, this colossal gas reservoir is set to fuel China’s economic growth, improve the living standards of millions, and contribute to the nation’s status as a global energy powerhouse. As the world continues to seek sustainable and diversified energy sources, this achievement in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is a shining example of innovation, determination, and progress in the field of energy exploration and production.
