Undying Bonds: Former Classmates Rally to Support Accident-Afflicted Friend

LifestyleUndying Bonds: Former Classmates Rally to Support Accident-Afflicted Friend

Life often throws curveballs that can break even the strongest among us. But for Xiong Qianjin, a tragic accident that left him with severe brain damage, became a testament to the power of friendship and the kindness of old classmates.

In 1996, just a year after graduating from a secondary school in Changde, Hunan province, Xiong’s life took a tragic turn. A terrible road accident with a bus left him in a coma for nearly two months. Upon waking, he found himself battling lifelong physical disabilities and partial amnesia. This condition meant he couldn’t remember certain events post his school years. Yet, the memories of his school friends remained intact, a beacon of light in his otherwise foggy recollections.

In a serendipitous moment in 2005, Xiong bumped into one of these friends, Fu Xibao. Fu was taken aback by Xiong’s appearance – a shadow of the vibrant classmate he once knew. He learned of Xiong’s challenging circumstances, which had worsened after the death of his father in 2015, forcing Xiong and his mother to survive on her scant pension.

Fu felt compelled to help and soon rallied their old schoolmates to support Xiong. This spontaneous gesture evolved into a heartwarming commitment. Currently, a group of 49 friends collectively contribute around 12,000 yuan (approximately US$1,600) annually, ensuring Xiong and his mother can live more comfortably. This financial assistance is supplemented by regular visits, where they reminisce about their school days, offering Xiong solace and cherished moments of companionship.

Their support didn’t stop at financial contributions. With their encouragement, Xiong has learned to operate a computer and has even discovered a newfound passion for writing. “Without my classmates’ consistent care and company, I might have lost hope entirely,” shared a grateful Xiong.

Xiong’s story with his classmates is a remarkable example of the enduring nature of bonds formed during our formative years. Their commitment to stand by him, come what may, highlights the unparalleled strength of true friendship. He shared, “You’ve shown me the true essence of love in this world. I will treasure our bond forever.”

Social media users across China have been deeply touched by this heartwarming tale. On Douyin, the story amassed a staggering 7 million views. One viewer commented on the rarity of such dedication, noting, “Many relatives wouldn’t extend the kind of support these classmates have offered consistently over the years.” Another remarked, “The parents of these amazing individuals must be so proud.”

Stories of unyielding friendship resonate deeply with many. Another poignant tale shared on social media revolved around a teenager from Jiangxi province who, for six continuous years, carried his paraplegic classmate on his back throughout the school, a touching demonstration of compassion.
