Brothers in China Warm Hearts by Carrying Mother in Bamboo Basket to Hospital

LifestyleBrothers in China Warm Hearts by Carrying Mother in Bamboo Basket to Hospital

In the bustling streets of Chongqing municipality, southwestern China, a sight both heartwarming and poignant caught the attention of passersby. Two brothers, carrying their frail 89-year-old mother to the hospital in a sizeable bamboo basket, became the symbols of true filial piety. The emotional journey, captured in a video by an observant pedestrian, soon garnered millions of views, resonating deeply with viewers across the nation.

The older sibling, Chen Chuan, 58, alongside his brother Chen Li, 55, resorted to this unconventional mode of transportation due to their mother’s unique health challenges. Their elderly mother, unfortunately, suffers from car sickness and experiences severe headaches when seated in a wheelchair. Their dedication to her comfort overrode any societal judgments or physical discomfort they might have felt.

The brothers’ concern for their mother’s well-being has a history. Chen Li’s wife, Zhang Qingrong, shed light on their past endeavors, saying, “Previously they carried her on their back without a basket or held her in their arms on their way to the hospital.” However, on that particular day, when their mother mentioned her discomfort, they improvised with the bamboo basket, which turned out to be a more comfortable option for her.

The journey to the hospital, lasting more than 20 minutes, was taxing for the siblings. At one point in the video, while taking a brief respite, one brother can be seen gently patting his waist, a clear indication of the strain and exhaustion he was experiencing.

Interestingly, the brothers had previously worked as migrant workers in another city. Yet, their commitment to family brought them back to their roots in Chongqing. Last year, they started a noodle restaurant, ensuring they remained close to their mother, tending to her needs daily. As Zhang pointed out, “The mother cared for us when we were young, and we should care for her when she is old.” Their gesture was a tangible manifestation of this belief.

The poignant video resonated deeply with online viewers, receiving 1.4 million likes and drawing 60,000 comments on Douyin. Many remarked about the possible history of the bamboo basket, speculating it might have been the very vessel their mother used to carry them in their infancy. Others applauded the brothers for their unwavering commitment and love.

China has always been a land where stories of familial love and sacrifice are cherished. Instances like a man from Tianjin spending nearly a decade caring for his ailing mother or another from Guangdong who tenderly cared for his pregnant wife reaffirm these values.

Such tales remind us of the depths of human love and commitment, proving that even in our rapidly changing world, the bonds of family remain as strong as ever.
