Funeral Hall Balcony Sparks Neighbor Dispute in Hangzhou

LifestyleFuneral Hall Balcony Sparks Neighbor Dispute in Hangzhou

In an upscale residential community in Hangzhou, eastern China, a man’s unique approach to a neighborly dispute has sparked controversy and unease among residents. The man, troubled by the low-frequency humming of a ground-floor grocery store’s refrigerator, transformed his balcony into a makeshift funeral hall, complete with wreaths and a memorial tablet. His intention was to deter customers from visiting the store, but the plan backfired, leading to widespread complaints and concerns about possible civic code violations.

The conflict began two years ago in Zhejiang province’s Hangzhou city when the upstairs neighbor expressed frustration over the constant hum from the grocery store’s equipment. The community affairs committee initially stepped in, resulting in fines for the store by local authorities. Despite the store’s compliance with the neighbor’s demands, including moving the refrigerator and removing a large fish tank, the man’s dissatisfaction persisted.

“We have addressed all his concerns,” an employee from the grocery store stated. “He even resorted to splashing oil on our walls. It seems he wants us out of the neighborhood.”

The drastic measure of converting his balcony into a funeral site has not only failed to resolve the issue but also created an unsettling atmosphere in the neighborhood. Residents have voiced their discomfort, with one noting, “It’s chilling to see funeral wreaths on a balcony, especially with the bright red lights at night.”

This unconventional dispute has raised legal questions, with Li Li from Chongqing Jieheng Law Firm pointing out that the man’s actions may infringe upon a Civil Code rule mandating the maintenance of public order. “Residents could collectively file a lawsuit to protect their rights,” Li suggested.

The funeral-themed balcony has also impacted the community’s reputation and real estate market, with a resident named Fang expressing concern: “Our upscale community is now struggling with flat sales due to these morbid displays.”

This incident is among several bizarre neighbor disputes gaining attention on social media in mainland China. In a similar case in Jilin province, a man reported his neighbor to the police over 40 times in a year for aggressive behavior, but authorities were unable to intervene effectively due to suspected mental health issues.
