The upcoming Group One Longines Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin is poised to see an infusion of American talent, as Christophe Clement-trained Soldier Rising joins the prestigious HK$24 million race. This marks a notable occasion, as Soldier Rising will be the first American entry at the Hong Kong International Races (HKIR) since 2017, following the participation of Peter Miller’s Stormy Liberal.
Soldier Rising, previously trained by Andre Fabre in France, has spent the last two and a half years under Clement’s guidance in the US. Although yet to clinch a black-type victory, the stayer’s consistency is evident in his four runner-up finishes in prominent Group One races in 2023. These include the Man o’ War Stakes, Manhattan Stakes, Sword Dancer Stakes, and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Stakes.
The participation of American horses in the HKIR has been historically significant, with two previous winners – Glen Kate in 1993 and Val’s Prince in 1997. Soldier Rising’s entry revitalizes this tradition and adds a layer of international competition to the event.
The Japanese contingent, which has dominated the Hong Kong Vase in recent years, is again strong. With the success of Win Marilyn in the previous edition, Japan is fielding four potential successors, including Group One winners Shahryar and Geraldina, as well as Group Two victors Zeffiro and Lebensstil. Overall, Japan has 14 representatives across the four HKIR races.
Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien, with a record of success in the Vase, fields Warm Heart, a Group One Prix Vermeille winner, aiming to replicate the achievements of Highland Reel and Mogul. Simon and Ed Crisford’s West Wind Blows and Andre Fabre’s Junko represent the British and French challenges, respectively.
Hong Kong’s aspirations rest on the shoulders of Russian Emperor, who, along with Senor Toba, Five G Patch, and La City Blanche, seeks to recapture local glory in the race, last achieved by Exultant in 2018.
The Longines Hong Kong Vase, known for its rich history and global appeal, is shaping up to be a compelling race, blending local talent with international flair. Fans eagerly await to see if Soldier Rising can make a splash on the international stage and continue the legacy of American success at the event.
