SportsTom Marquand Eyes Potential Future in Hong Kong Racing Scene

British jockey Tom Marquand, alongside his wife and fellow jockey Hollie Doyle, is considering a potential future in Hong Kong’s horse racing scene. The couple, known for their remarkable achievements in the sport, have been captivated by the competitive nature and high standards of Hong Kong racing during their visits.

Marquand, who has already made a significant impact in Hong Kong, especially with his shared victory in last year’s International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC) and participation in this year’s event, sees Hong Kong as an attractive option for their careers. Despite not scoring in this year’s IJC, won by Vincent Ho Chak-yiu, the couple’s involvement with a range of trainers in the city highlights the opportunities available in Hong Kong’s dynamic racing environment.

The prospect of moving to Hong Kong is viewed as an inevitable step in their career progression. Marquand, who has enjoyed global success including Group One victories across Australia, the United States, and the UK, is enticed by the prospect of expanding his experience and honing his skills in Hong Kong’s challenging racing landscape. The couple’s connections with numerous trainers during their time in Hong Kong could prove beneficial if they decide to make the move.

Doyle, with an impressive 12% strike rate in Hong Kong, has demonstrated her capability to excel in the city’s racing circuit. This potential move would see them join a line of UK jockeys like Andrea Atzeni, Harry Bentley, and Silvestre de Sousa, who have ventured to Hong Kong to further their careers.

Their recent visit to Hong Kong, free from COVID restrictions, allowed Marquand and Doyle to explore the city more thoroughly, including showing Doyle’s parents around. This experience has further fueled their interest in the city, both professionally and personally.

Marquand, also known for his achievements in Australia and known as “Aussie Tom,” reached a milestone of 1,000 wins during the British flat season, with Doyle also notching significant victories. Their potential move to Hong Kong represents a strategic decision to immerse themselves in one of the world’s most competitive racing environments, with the aim of enhancing their skills and continuing their successful journey in horse racing.
