Discovering Ancient Life: New Armored Fish Fossil Unearthed in China

ChinaDiscovering Ancient Life: New Armored Fish Fossil Unearthed in China

In a significant breakthrough for paleontology, Chinese scientists have unearthed a new fish fossil in Lixi town, Wuning County of Jiujiang city, located in East China’s Jiangxi Province. This area is renowned for being a rich fossil site, particularly for ancient vertebrates. The discovery was made by researchers from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology at the Chinese Academy of Science.

The fossil, named the Lixi Western Region Fish, is estimated to be an astonishing 438 million years old. This finding places the fish species squarely in the Silurian period, a crucial era in the history of biological evolution that spanned from 443.8 to 419.2 million years ago. The Silurian period is noted for numerous significant biological events, including the diversification of early life forms.

The discovery of the Lixi Western Region Fish is particularly notable as it deepens our understanding of the evolutionary history and diversity of armored fish. This group of jawless fish is unique to China and northern Vietnam, representing a critical component of the region’s prehistoric ecosystem. The fish’s distinctive characteristics, such as its serrated edges on the head armor, set it apart from other species like the Zhang’s Western Region Fish, previously found in Keping, Xinjiang.

Jiujiang in Jiangxi Province has been identified as an essential fossil site for studying ancient vertebrates from the early Silurian period. The region, specifically Wuning County, has yielded a diverse array of animal groups, with armored fish species being predominant.

The newly discovered Lixi Western Region Fish is the fourth newly identified armored fish species in Jiujiang. It follows the discovery of other species such as the Junqing Clearwater Fish, the Hedgehog Anji Fish, and the Jiujiang Jiangxia Fish. The latter was uncovered by the same research team earlier in May in the early Silurian layers of Wuning, Jiujiang.

Further investigations by the team in May revealed that the Jiujiang Jiangxia Fish and the Houti Jiangxia Fish, found in Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei Province, are part of the same fish genus family. This discovery suggests that these species are long-lost “siblings,” having been separated around 438 million years ago.

This groundbreaking discovery, now published in the Acta Geologica Sinica-English Edition, underscores the importance of systematic paleobiology research. Lead author Shan Xianren has likened this research to a “family reunion journey for extinct species,” especially significant when different species under the same genus are identified. The discovery of the Lixi Western Region Fish not only adds to the growing body of knowledge about prehistoric life but also highlights the rich paleontological heritage of China’s Jiangxi Province.
