Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese baseball phenomenon, has taken the sports world by storm with his latest move – signing a monumental 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers worth an astounding $700 million. This deal not only sets a new precedent in Major League Baseball (MLB) but also eclipses record contracts across all major North American sports leagues, including the NFL and NBA.
The 29-year-old former Los Angeles Angels star, known for his rare dual prowess as a pitcher and hitter, made the announcement on Instagram, expressing gratitude to his fans and commitment to his new team, the Dodgers. “I pledge to always do what’s best for the team and continue to give my all to be the best version of myself,” Ohtani wrote, signaling his dedication to advancing not just his team but the sport of baseball as a whole.
This contract surpasses the previous MLB record held by Ohtani’s former Angels teammate, Mike Trout, who in 2019 secured a 12-year deal worth $426.5 million. It also overtakes the largest deal in any North American sport previously held by NFL’s Patrick Mahomes, who signed a 10-year extension worth $450 million in 2020.
Ohtani’s arrival in MLB in 2018 marked a turning point in the league, drawing comparisons to Babe Ruth for his unique combination of elite pitching and hitting. Despite the Angels’ struggles to reach the playoffs, Ohtani’s individual brilliance shone through, earning him the American League Most Valuable Player award twice, in 2021 and 2023, both times by unanimous vote.
His 2023 season was particularly impressive despite an elbow injury. Ohtani led the AL in home runs with 44, achieving a rare feat of at least 10 wins as a pitcher and 10 home runs as a hitter for two consecutive seasons, a record previously set by Babe Ruth in 1918.
Ohtani’s decision not to pitch in 2024, to aid recovery, will not deter him from contributing as a designated hitter. His impact extends beyond the field, as he became a commercial sensation, earning a record $65 million in salary and endorsements and having the top-selling jersey in MLB.
The baseball star’s influence was also pivotal in Japan’s victory in the World Baseball Classic earlier this year, showcasing his exceptional talent on an international stage. With this historic contract, Ohtani continues to redefine the limits of what is possible in the world of sports, both on and off the field.
