The Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, has become a vibrant cultural hub with the opening of the “Silk Road Splendor” Dunhuang Caves Art Exhibition. This exhibition, a significant event in Taiwan’s cultural calendar, marks the largest and most comprehensive presentation of Dunhuang art on the island. Over 140 artifacts, including replicas of the famed Dunhuang caves, murals, and manuscripts, are on display, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the historical and artistic legacy of the Silk Road.
This remarkable exhibition is the result of a collaborative effort between the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum and the esteemed Dunhuang Academy. Scheduled to run until April 2024, “Silk Road Splendor” is more than just an art show; it’s a cultural journey that traverses time and space, bringing the wonders of ancient Silk Road to the present day.
Complementing the visual feast are a series of lectures focusing on the protection and restoration of the Dunhuang Caves. These sessions aim to educate and inspire, highlighting the importance of preserving this invaluable cultural heritage. Additionally, the exhibition offers a chance to engage in hands-on experiences, with performances and workshops dedicated to Dunhuang mural painting. These activities provide an immersive experience, enabling visitors to connect with the art and history of Dunhuang on a deeper level.
Li Qun, head of the China Cultural Heritage Promotion Association, shared his insights at the opening ceremony. He emphasized the exhibition’s role in showcasing the enduring charm of the Silk Road and the open, inclusive nature of Chinese culture. Su Bomin, director of the Dunhuang Academy, expressed the hope that the exhibition would create avenues for the people of Taiwan to experience Dunhuang art and the history of the Silk Road firsthand. Similarly, Xin Ru, representing the Fo Guang Shan Foundation for Buddhist Culture and Education, underscored the historical significance of the Dunhuang Grottoes in the convergence of Chinese culture and Buddhist art. The exhibition is seen as a catalyst for deepening cross-strait cultural exchanges and cooperation.
Dunhuang, located in Northwest China’s Gansu Province, has been a pivotal hub on the Silk Road since the Han Dynasty (206BC-AD220). It was a melting pot where Eastern and Western civilizations intersected, resulting in the creation of the Mogao Grottoes. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its repository of ancient Buddhist art.
Among the many highlights of the exhibition is the replica of the reclining Buddha statue from Mogao Cave 158. This exhibit symbolizes the painstaking efforts of the Dunhuang Academy to bring a tangible piece of history to Taiwan. Additionally, the offering painting from the Mogao Caves, known as “Homage to the Buddha,” renowned for its intactness and exquisite artistry, is also on display.
Another notable artifact is the Dunhuang Cave Manuscript, featuring the Lotus Sutra. Written on indigo paper with silver columns and gold characters, this manuscript exemplifies a unique technique still revered today. It stands as a testament to the rich literary heritage housed within the Dunhuang Library Cave.
Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to admire the meticulous reproductions of cave murals, which depict Jataka tales, figures, sutra illustrations, and patrons.
