The China-Laos Railway: Bridging Dreams and Cultures for Laotian Youth

In an inspiring tale of cultural exchange and youthful discovery, a group of Laotian children embarked on a journey across China, their adventures beautifully captured in the documentary “The Memory of All the Blissful Moments.” This poignant film, produced by China Media Group and recently aired on China Central Television (CCTV), offers a window into the vibrant experiences of these children, influenced by the newly established China-Laos Railway.

Among the youngsters featured is Sousongpha, a 10-year-old girl from Laos, who for the first time in her life, marveled at the majestic Great Wall of Beijing. Overwhelmed by its grandeur, she experienced a sense of awe that was entirely new to her. Similarly, 12-year-old Geota took to a stage in Beijing, overcoming language barriers to proudly present Lao culture in a foreign land.

In Xiamen, Peilingda, a 12-year-old with a passion for Chinese songs developed since she was three, finally saw the sea, a sight that had long lived in her imagination. This moment symbolized the beginning of a dream for her. Meanwhile, in Xi’an, Pasougan, another 12-year-old, delved into the depths of history by crafting a replica of a Terracotta Warrior, an experience that seamlessly blended the past and present.

These personal stories form the essence of the documentary, which highlights the journey of these Laotian youngsters as they travel to various Chinese cities via the China-Laos Railway. This trip, which included interactive sessions with Chinese primary school students, showcased the children’s genuine emotions and joy, offering an authentic perspective on the friendships and connections formed.

The China-Laos Railway, extending from Kunming in China’s Yunnan Province to Vientiane, the Laotian capital, serves as more than just a mode of transportation. It symbolizes the deepening bond between the two nations, transforming Laos from a landlocked country to a pivotal land-linked hub. This transformation is part of the Belt and Road Initiative, underscoring the shared future envisioned by China and Laos.

The 16-day journey documented in the film is filled with numerous “first times” for these Laotian youngsters, moments that signify their growing confidence and eagerness to engage with the wider world. Pasougan, expressing his feelings in the documentary, likens the experience to an orange-colored dream, a reference to his favorite color and the vividness of his journey.
