In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the feet are considered one of the most crucial parts of the human body. This belief is encapsulated in the Chinese saying, “All diseases arise from cold, and cold enters the body through the feet.” According to TCM, the body functions as an interconnected system where energy, or qi, flows through a network of meridians or pathways. The feet, rich in acupressure points, serve as gateways to influencing the body’s internal organs and systems.

Professor Yu Jin from the Clinical Medical College of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Rehabilitation at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine in Guangdong province describes meridians as an information network, with acupoints functioning as nodes. “When you get on one node, you can connect to other places,” he explains. This means that foot acupuncture, which involves inserting fine needles into the skin, can alleviate not only foot pain but also ailments originating in other organs.

Foot acupuncture is a specialized TCM technique for treating various ailments, whereas foot massage is more commonly used for general health maintenance. However, acupressure foot massage, which targets the same energy points and meridians as acupuncture but uses pressure instead of needles, can also provide significant health benefits.
