Wu-Tang Clan’s Unique Album “Once Upon A Time in Shaolin” Draws Massive Interest in Australian Museum

The unique Wu-Tang Clan album “Once Upon A Time in Shaolin” is set to be played at a museum in Australia starting Saturday, drawing immense interest from fans. All available timeslots for the twice-daily listening sessions have been quickly reserved, with approximately 5,000 people still on the waiting list, according to the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Tasmania. The album will be showcased from June 15 to 24.

Jarrod Rawlins, director of curatorial affairs at MONA, highlighted the album’s significance: “The Wu-Tang album captures people’s imaginations, it’s a very important piece of pop culture and it’s an incredible work of art,” he stated. Despite the high demand, Rawlins confirmed that the museum cannot accommodate any additional slots for the listening sessions.

“Once Upon A Time in Shaolin” is a singular piece of music history, with only one physical copy in existence. The album was originally purchased by convicted pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli in 2015 for $2 million. However, Shkreli forfeited the album to partially satisfy a $7.4 million forfeiture order following his 2017 conviction for defrauding hedge fund investors and scheming to defraud investors in a pharmaceutical company.

The album now belongs to PleasrDAO, a group of non-fungible token (NFT) collectors, who acquired it for $4 million from the U.S. government. PleasrDAO is currently embroiled in a legal battle with Shkreli, accusing him of making unauthorized copies of the album and releasing its music to the public.

The museum’s announcement of the album’s exhibition has generated considerable excitement, reflecting the enduring allure of Wu-Tang Clan and the mystique surrounding this one-of-a-kind album. The overwhelming response underscores the cultural and artistic impact of “Once Upon A Time in Shaolin,” which continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
