“Serendipity’s Embrace,” an adaptation of Nam Ji-eun’s 2011 webtoon “Is It Fate?”, has finally graced our screens after completing production in early 2023. However, while it avoids common K-drama tropes like fantasy elements and chaebol heirs, the show feels somewhat half-baked and lacks the must-watch appeal.
The series stars Kim So-hyun as Lee Hong-ju, a bubbly young producer for animated productions who is wary of relationships due to past heartbreaks. Opposite her is Chae Jong-hyeop as Kang Hoo-yeong, a financial expert recently returned from America to revamp his company’s Korean division. The twist? Hoo-yeong’s first love is Hong-ju, who doesn’t share the same feelings as she was merely the messenger of love letters from her best friend Kim Hye-ji (Kim Da-som) during their high school days.
The story picks up when Hong-ju and Hoo-yeong serendipitously cross paths multiple times in a single day, leading Hoo-yeong to give her his number, hoping she’ll contact him. Instead, it’s Hye-ji who reaches out, reigniting her long-held feelings for him. Hoo-yeong, still pining for Hong-ju, agrees to meet Hye-ji in hopes of seeing Hong-ju more often.
The plot further thickens when Hong-ju is tasked with showing Hoo-yeong around town under the mistaken belief he is a young niece. Their day together includes amusement park visits and dressing up in traditional hanbok, fostering a deeper connection. Adding to the drama, Hong-ju discovers her ex, Bang Joon-ho (Yun Ji-on), will be a collaborator on her next project, which he sees as an opportunity to rekindle their relationship.
Despite its efforts, “Serendipity’s Embrace” feels more like a forgettable piece of lift music rather than a catchy, memorable tune. The show has no glaring issues but lacks the distinctive elements that make for a standout series. Both Kim So-hyun and Chae Jong-hyeop have delivered more compelling performances in other recent shows, such as “My Lovely Liar” and “Castaway Diva,” respectively.
In essence, “Serendipity’s Embrace” offers a typical romantic comedy setup without the freshness or excitement needed to make it truly engaging. While it may not strike any off-key notes, it also doesn’t provide a particularly captivating or memorable viewing experience.
