At Sotheby’s in London, renowned British singer-songwriter and artist FKA twigs has introduced an immersive performance artwork titled “The Eleven”. In a departure from the traditional auction house setting, groups of participants are engaging in a series of dynamic movements—swinging arms, twisting bodies, and thrusting hips—set to a pulsating techno soundtrack. The performance, choreographed by FKA twigs, is intended to explore key aspects of human well-being and connect individuals with their bodies in an era of constant distractions.

The artwork is performed by 11 individuals at a time, each executing 11 distinct movements in a continuous loop. These movements represent different elements of life that FKA twigs considers essential for personal balance and mental well-being. From artistic creation to self-awareness and a reconnection with nature, the piece draws from the artist’s own experiences and understanding of holistic wellness.

FKA twigs, born Tahliah Barnett, explained that the choreography was designed to help people disconnect from external distractions like social media and refocus on their inner selves. “I started doing it myself and it works,” she shared, adding that she wanted to create a space within Sotheby’s where participants could experience the same sense of reconnection. The performance, which combines dance, mindfulness, and self-expression, is a testament to her belief in the power of movement as a form of healing.

Sotheby’s, a 280-year-old auction house known for its fine art and historical artifacts, is embracing this unconventional collaboration with FKA twigs as part of its efforts to engage with newer, more diverse audiences. Lisa Stevenson, Sotheby’s director of contemporary art, noted that the partnership aligns with the company’s goal to appeal to the “next generation of collectors.” By hosting “The Eleven”, Sotheby’s hopes to create a cultural space that resonates beyond the traditional art market.

At the heart of the performance is a concept that FKA twigs refers to as “Eusexua”—a word she coined to describe a state of peak human experience. According to the artist, this feeling is akin to the euphoria of dancing all night or the joy of a sudden, creative breakthrough. Eusexua is also the title of her latest single, released in conjunction with the unveiling of the artwork, and will be featured in her forthcoming album.

The unique fusion of performance art, music, and personal well-being in “The Eleven” offers participants a rare opportunity to engage with art in a deeply physical and emotional way, bridging the gap between contemporary culture and the auction house environment.
