Taron Egerton’s “Carry-On”: A Tribute to TSA Workers and Holiday Chaos

CultureFilm & TvTaron Egerton's "Carry-On": A Tribute to TSA Workers and Holiday Chaos

In the upcoming Netflix action film Carry-On, actor Taron Egerton pays a heartfelt tribute to TSA workers and the challenges they face, particularly during the holiday rush. Egerton, known for his roles in films like Kingsman, stars as Ethan Kopek, a TSA agent at a crossroads in life. His character is encouraged by his girlfriend, Nora Parisi, played by Sofia Carson, as he navigates a morally complex situation at the airport.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Carry-On also features Danielle Deadwyler as Elena Cole, an FBI agent drawn into the unfolding drama. The plot centers around Kopek, who is coerced by a mysterious stranger, played by Jason Bateman, to help smuggle a dangerous package through security and onto a flight scheduled to depart on Christmas Day.

The film, a collaboration between Netflix and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners, brings a fresh spin to the holiday action genre. For Egerton, the film is a “spiritual salute” to TSA agents, acknowledging the demanding nature of their jobs. “I really hope they feel good about it when they see it,” Egerton said, referring to the workers the movie seeks to honor.

Carry-On explores the high-stakes world of airport security, especially during the chaotic holiday season. Danielle Deadwyler, who plays an FBI agent in the film, compares it to the iconic Die Hard, saying, “Christmas is chaos. The airport is chaos.” The movie aims to deliver a nostalgic, action-packed experience, transporting viewers into the familiar yet intense environment of holiday travel.

To bring authenticity to their roles, Egerton and Carson spent time shadowing real-life TSA agents and airport workers. Carson, who plays Nora, spent several days with the director of airport operations at the New Orleans airport as part of her preparation. “It’s not an easy feat to make an airport run, or to be a TSA agent,” she reflected, acknowledging the demanding work involved.

The film goes beyond action and thriller elements, highlighting the humanity behind the airport staff. Deadwyler emphasized the importance of compassion for those working in the high-pressure environment of airports, especially during the busy holiday season. “Everybody at the airport needs love and support,” she said, pointing out that TSA workers deal with anxious travelers year-round, not just during the holidays.

With Carry-On, Netflix offers a thrilling yet thoughtful look at the holiday season’s most chaotic setting, combining high-action sequences with a genuine appreciation for the people who keep airports running smoothly.
