Nearly a decade after the groundbreaking success of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, CD Projekt Red has unveiled a teaser trailer for the next installment in the acclaimed fantasy RPG series. The trailer, shown at a Game Awards event in Los Angeles, introduces a bold shift in the franchise’s narrative focus by centering on Ciri, Geralt of Rivia’s adoptive daughter.

“For the longest time, we knew that we wanted Ciri to be the protagonist of The Witcher IV,” said game director Sebastian Kalemba. “In this game, we want to explore what it means to truly become a witcher by following Ciri on her Path. This trailer is a taste of both that, and just how dark and grounded the world of The Witcher can be.”

The cinematic trailer begins with villagers attempting to sacrifice a young woman to a monster in the woods, only to be interrupted by Ciri. Armed with her signature dual swords, potions, and enhanced magic powers, she steps in to save the day, showcasing new tools like a chain weapon alongside her witcher signs.

While the trailer provides a glimpse of the game’s tone and premise, details about the gameplay remain sparse. CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the game will expand the universe of The Witcher 3 while introducing fresh mechanics and abilities. The fate of Geralt, who can die in certain endings of The Witcher 3, remains unconfirmed, leaving fans speculating about his role, if any, in the new saga.

The Witcher IV marks a significant evolution for the medieval fantasy franchise, which has sold over 75 million copies since its debut in 2007. CD Projekt Red has described the game as the “most immersive and ambitious open-world Witcher game to date.”

Despite the excitement, no release date has been announced. Given the delays that plagued Cyberpunk 2077, analysts predict the game will debut in 2026 or 2027. While this timeline may leave CD Projekt without a major earnings driver in the interim, the studio appears committed to taking the time needed to deliver a polished and immersive experience.

For fans of The Witcher, the return to this richly detailed universe promises a captivating adventure as Ciri embarks on her journey to define what it truly means to walk the Path of a witcher.
