Cinema has always been a refuge, offering both an escape from reality and a reflection of our dreams. Netflix’s latest Korean drama, Melo Movie, embraces this theme through the journey of young adults whose lives revolve around film. Written by Lee Na-eun, who previously gained acclaim for Our Beloved Summer, the series follows characters transitioning from their twenties to their thirties, capturing their evolving ambitions and relationships.
The story centers on Ko Gyeom (Choi Woo-shik), a passionate film enthusiast raised by his older brother. Fueled by a lifelong dream to watch every movie ever made, he aspires to contribute to the industry. However, despite his extensive knowledge of cinema, he struggles to land meaningful roles, ultimately becoming an extra on film sets. His enthusiasm and charm make him a beloved presence, except for Kim Mu-bee (Park Bo-young), a film crew member with a painful past tied to the industry.
Mu-bee, named after her late father’s love for movies, is emotionally guarded. She resents Gyeom’s lighthearted approach, yet his persistence gradually breaks down her defenses. However, just as their bond deepens, Gyeom vanishes without explanation.
Years later, Mu-bee finds success as a director, while Gyeom has become an online film critic, dedicating much of his time to caring for his injured brother. Their paths cross again at a Q&A session, where Gyeom questions the authenticity of Mu-bee’s film—a reference to a personal moment they once shared. Their unexpected reunion stirs unresolved emotions, setting the stage for a second chance at love.
The series also follows their friends Hong Si-jun (Lee Jun-young) and Son Ju-a (Jeon So-nee), former sweethearts whose careers pull them in different directions. Ju-a, now a recognized screenwriter, is developing a project inspired by her past with Si-jun, while he struggles to make a name for himself as a composer. Their intertwined journeys add depth to the story’s themes of ambition, nostalgia, and the sacrifices made for love and art.
Melo Movie pays homage to cinema, referencing classics like Cinema Paradiso and directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and Stephen Chow. While infused with traditional K-drama elements—romantic tension, emotional conflicts, and picturesque settings—it stands out for its realistic portrayal of youth navigating an uncertain future.
