Stephen Sondheim’s Legacy Lives On in “Old Friends” Broadway Show

Stephen Sondheim, the legendary theatre composer, was known for his love of puzzles, and upon his passing in 2021, he left behind a unique challenge for his dear friend, British super-producer Cameron Mackintosh. Together, the two had conceived the idea for a revue of Sondheim’s songs during the pandemic. They began compiling a list of tunes that they wanted to feature in the production. However, with Sondheim’s death, the task of bringing the show to life fell to Mackintosh.

Reflecting on their discussions, Mackintosh recalls, “I did say to him, ‘I really want to concentrate on the music’,” emphasizing their shared vision of the show being deeply personal, though they never fully completed the construction of the idea. Sondheim passed away in November 2021, and shortly thereafter, Mackintosh took it upon himself to create a framework for what would become Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends.

This musical revue has now come to fruition on Broadway, featuring a star-studded cast that includes Tony Award winners Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga. The production showcases some of Sondheim’s most unforgettable songs, each a testament to his profound impact on musical theatre. Among the classics performed are “The Ladies Who Lunch,” “I’m Still Here,” “Send in the Clowns,” “Losing My Mind,” “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” and “Children Will Listen,” all of which reflect Sondheim’s unique storytelling and musical genius.

Although Mackintosh and Sondheim had only begun to sketch out the revue, Mackintosh’s determination to honor his friend’s legacy led to the creation of a heartfelt tribute. By bringing these iconic songs together, Old Friends celebrates Sondheim’s genius while offering a personal connection to his music, making it a fitting homage to one of Broadway’s greatest composers. The show not only showcases Sondheim’s timeless work but also offers audiences a chance to reflect on the enduring legacy of the man who redefined musical theatre for generations to come.
