Hong Kong-born artist Sarah Tse Man-heng has created a life where the world serves as her studio. A digital nomad, Tse combines her love for travel with her passion for art, drawing inspiration from the diverse landscapes and cultures she encounters. Tse’s Instagram features her stunning paintings captured in equally beautiful locations, such as Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls, Finland’s Tampere forests, and Costa Rica’s Monteverde. In one photo from Zimbabwe, Tse paints as an elephant strolls by, illustrating the unique connection between her art and nature. Her time in Finland inspired her painting The Magic Mushrooms, which reflects the serene ambiance of the Finnish wilderness, where Tse spent mornings hiking and observing the natural world.
In Mexico, Tse immersed herself in the Day of the Dead festivities, a tradition that celebrates life and death through vibrant marigolds. Other images show her painting in Oaxaca, New York, and Indonesia’s Lombok Island, where the surrounding environments and cultures deeply influence her work. Tse’s journey to becoming a nomadic artist began after she moved to the UK in 2005 to study economics. However, she soon discovered her true passion for painting, which led her to pursue art, despite initial resistance from her parents.
Since her first solo show in 2009, Tse has exhibited her work in over 100 solo and group exhibitions globally, including in Hong Kong, London, New York, and Tokyo. A portion of her work is part of the permanent collection at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. Tse spends much of her year traveling, often staying with local families to immerse herself in authentic cultural experiences. This approach to travel, she says, isn’t about visiting tourist sites or staying in luxury hotels; instead, it’s about community connection and embracing local lifestyles.
Through her travels, Tse has developed a rich understanding of different cultures, which has expanded both her imagination and her artistic palette. Her art has evolved, moving from monochrome lithographs to the vibrant, colorful works she is known for today. Becoming a nomadic artist has brought its challenges, from managing logistics to maintaining client relationships, but Tse embraces these hurdles as part of her artistic growth. Her packing is minimal, prioritizing only the tools she needs to create. Tse believes that travel not only makes her a better artist but also helps her find deeper meaning in life.
