Lindsay Lohan Returns to the Big Screen in “Freakier Friday” Sequel

CultureFilm & TvLindsay Lohan Returns to the Big Screen in “Freakier Friday” Sequel

Lindsay Lohan is stepping back into one of her most iconic roles, returning alongside Jamie Lee Curtis for the highly anticipated Disney sequel “Freakier Friday.” Now 39 and a new mother herself, Lohan revealed that her personal experience of motherhood deeply influenced her performance. The actress, who welcomed her first child in 2023, explained that filming the sequel just a year later created a sense of perfect timing. For the first time in her career, she was able to bring her identity as a mom into a character on screen, something she described as both emotional and creatively fulfilling.

The original “Freaky Friday,” released in 2003 with a modest $26 million budget, went on to gross more than $160 million worldwide and became a beloved family classic with a strong cult following. The new installment, directed by Nisha Ganatra, builds on that legacy with a fresh twist. Set two decades later, Anna Coleman, played by Lohan, is now a single mother raising her teenage daughter Harper, portrayed by Julia Butters. Their relationship is tested when Anna falls in love with Eric, played by Manny Jacinto, who happens to be the father of Harper’s new British classmate Lily, portrayed by Sophia Hammons. The announcement of their engagement stirs tension between the soon-to-be stepsisters, who plot to derail the union. This time, however, the magical body swap does not just involve Anna and her mother Tess, but also Harper and Lily, leading to even more chaotic and comedic consequences.

For Lohan, shaping Anna’s return was an important part of agreeing to the sequel. She wanted to ensure that Anna felt authentic and multi-dimensional, reflecting her growth into a working single mom while also staying true to the spirit of the original film. She expressed a desire for audiences to connect with Anna’s struggles and evolution, finding moments in the story that resonate with their own experiences.

Adding to the nostalgia factor, Chad Michael Murray reprises his role as Jake, Anna’s teenage love interest from the first film. Murray described the filming process as a “lovefest,” noting that the atmosphere felt both familiar and renewed, with the cast eager to be back together.

For Lohan, “Freakier Friday” represents not only a continuation of a beloved story but also a personal comeback to the big screen. Admitting to feeling both nervous and excited, she said her focus remains on delivering joy to audiences. The film begins its global rollout in theaters on August 6.
