WorldMiddle EastChina Urges Dialogue: Beijing Calls for Iran-US Talks Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions

Amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, China’s top diplomat, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, has urged Iran and the United States to engage in direct talks to resolve disputes. The appeal emphasizes a preference for dialogue over military action, highlighting China’s commitment to regional stability and peace.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, on Tuesday, during which he stressed the importance of resolving disputes through negotiation rather than force. Wang stated that “talking is always better than fighting,” a sentiment he believes serves the interests of Iran and its people, as well as aligning with the aspirations of the international community.

During the call, Araghchi briefed Wang on the latest regional developments and expressed appreciation for China’s humanitarian assistance. He conveyed that the Iranian people are uniting to resist external aggression and safeguard their national sovereignty and independence. Araghchi emphasized Iran’s commitment to achieving a comprehensive ceasefire, not merely a temporary truce. He also affirmed that the Strait of Hormuz remains open for safe passage for all ships, with the exception of those belonging to countries currently at war with Iran.

Wang reiterated China’s principled position that all “hotspot issues” should be resolved through dialogue and negotiation. He called on all parties involved to seize every opportunity for peace and initiate peace talks as soon as possible. China pledged to maintain an objective and impartial stance, oppose violations of sovereignty, and actively promote peace and stability in the region.

Araghchi expressed hope that all parties would take steps to de-escalate tensions rather than intensify the conflict. He voiced expectations for China to continue playing a constructive role in promoting peace and ending hostilities. The conversation also touched upon Iran’s efforts to secure a full ceasefire and its stance on maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
