BusinessSoftBank Secures Massive $40 Billion Loan to Fuel OpenAI Investments and AI Ambitions

SoftBank Group Corp. has announced a significant financial maneuver, securing a $40 billion bridge loan primarily to bolster its investment in artificial intelligence leader OpenAI. This substantial funding underscores SoftBank’s aggressive strategy to maintain a leading position in the rapidly evolving AI landscape and pursue other strategic initiatives.

The non-collateralized bridge loan, arranged by a consortium of prominent banks including JPMorgan Chase & Co., Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Mizuho Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., and MUFG Bank, will mature in 12 months. A significant portion of this capital, $30 billion, is earmarked for SoftBank’s follow-on investment in OpenAI, the company behind the groundbreaking ChatGPT. This injection is expected to increase SoftBank’s stake in OpenAI to 13% from its current 11%.

This substantial loan is part of SoftBank’s broader strategy to double down on its AI investments. The company has previously invested $34.6 billion in OpenAI since September 2024, with the new capital poised to bring the total investment to $64.6 billion. SoftBank plans to deploy this follow-on investment in three tranches of $10 billion each, scheduled for April, July, and October of the current year. Beyond OpenAI, SoftBank is also exploring other AI-related ventures, including a potential $4 billion takeover of digital infrastructure investment firm DigitalBridge Group.

SoftBank’s CEO, Masayoshi Son, has expressed strong alignment with OpenAI’s vision, highlighting their collaboration on the ambitious $500 billion Stargate project, aimed at building AI infrastructure in the United States. This strategic financial move comes despite SoftBank recently divesting its entire stake in Nvidia, redirecting capital towards its AI ambitions. The company views this investment as crucial for consolidating its position in the significant AI sector amidst intensifying global competition.
