The upcoming Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders’ summit, scheduled for May, will proceed as planned but with a significantly streamlined agenda. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that the summit will adopt a “bare-bones” program, prioritizing pressing regional concerns directly impacted by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

President Marcos Jr. consulted with his counterparts within the ASEAN bloc regarding the potential postponement of the summit due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East. The consensus reached was that it is precisely during times of global instability that coordinated efforts among member nations are most crucial. “The consensus that we came to is that it is precisely now that we must coordinate our efforts,” Marcos stated.

The revised agenda will concentrate on issues with immediate and significant impact on the region. These include ensuring stable fuel supplies, addressing rising food prices, and protecting the rights and welfare of migrant workers. These topics are seen as particularly relevant given the global economic disruptions potentially exacerbated by the Middle East conflict.

The Philippines is currently serving as ASEAN’s rotating chair, a responsibility that will continue until October. The nation has been hosting various ASEAN-related meetings since January. While the government had allocated significant funds for hosting ASEAN events in 2026, the decision to shorten the summit reflects a pragmatic approach to current global challenges.
