CultureOlivia Rodrigo Drops New Single 'Drop Dead' and Makes Surprise Coachella Appearance

Pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo has unveiled her latest single, “Drop Dead,” a track that signals a new direction for the artist. The song premiered alongside a visually striking music video and was given its live debut during a surprise appearance at Coachella, joining fellow artist Addison Rae on stage.

“Drop Dead” marks the first taste of Rodrigo’s third studio album, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love,” scheduled for release on June 12. Produced by long-time collaborator Dan Nigro, the single is described as a departure from her previous work, leaning into dreamy romance rather than the “scorched earth” kiss-offs of “Drivers License” or “Good 4 U.” The song’s title, “Drop Dead,” is not a barb but a confession of intense, crush-struck melodrama, with lyrics like “kiss me and I might drop dead.”

Rodrigo surprised fans at Coachella by joining Addison Rae during her set. After performing Rae’s single “Headphones On,” the two artists delivered the live debut of “Drop Dead.” This performance comes shortly after Rodrigo’s own headlining set at Glastonbury the previous year, where she performed with Robert Smith, the lead singer of The Cure. The influence of 1980s and ’90s alternative rock, particularly The Cure, is evident in “Drop Dead,” with an opening verse referencing their hit “Just Like Heaven.”

The music video for “Drop Dead,” directed by Petra Collins, features Rodrigo wandering through the opulent Palace of Versailles, embracing a defiantly girlish aesthetic reminiscent of Sofia Coppola’s “Marie Antoinette” era. The single is being positioned as “chapter 1” of the narrative for her new album, which fans speculate will explore themes of romance and potential heartbreak, possibly influenced by her rumored breakup with Louis Partridge. Despite the album’s title suggesting sadness, “Drop Dead” offers a hopeful, synth-pop sound, indicating a nuanced exploration of love and emotion on the upcoming record.
