Explosions were heard near a military base hosting American forces in northern Iraq and warning sirens sounded across Bahrain on Friday, hours after the United States completed a 13th consecutive night of strikes against Iran, sharply escalating a regional confrontation.
The fighting has intensified over the past week, with American forces conducting sustained strikes on targets inside Iran while Tehran has retaliated by attacking shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and targeting US assets and allies across the region.
The strait, one of the world’s most critical passages for global energy supplies, sits at the centre of the dispute. A significant share of the world’s seaborne oil transits the narrow waterway, and disruptions there carry immediate implications for international markets.
The latest exchanges follow a warning from US President Donald Trump, who pledged “major military punishment” for Iran and its Houthi allies. Iranian forces, in turn, issued a public advisory urging civilians in countries hosting American troops to remain at least 500 metres away from sites where US personnel are stationed.
Diplomatic efforts have so far failed to halt the fighting. Iran publicly rejected a report that it had turned down a US ceasefire proposal reportedly relayed by the Iraqi prime minister, with state media IRNA describing the account as “completely diversionary and misleading.”
The proposal, according to earlier reporting, was the only framework under consideration, but Tehran was said to be unwilling to accept a temporary arrangement that left the question of control over the Strait of Hormuz unresolved.
The current escalation builds on months of rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, including earlier waves of strikes that drew in Israel and widened the confrontation across the Middle East. Regional states hosting US forces, including Iraq and Bahrain, have found themselves increasingly exposed to the crossfire.
Bahrain hosts the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, while American troops are stationed at several bases in Iraq, making both countries potential flashpoints as the confrontation broadens.
The intensifying conflict has raised concerns among energy analysts and neighbouring governments over the stability of shipping lanes and the risk of a wider regional war. Nearby states have urged restraint while preparing for further disruptions.
With diplomatic channels stalled and both sides signalling readiness to continue military operations, the coming days are expected to prove decisive in determining whether the confrontation expands further or moves toward de-escalation.
