Maine Democrats selected Troy Jackson, a former state senate president, as their nominee for a pivotal U.S. Senate race on Saturday, ending a turbulent primary that had been upended by scandal and the withdrawal of the party’s original candidate.
Delegates to a hastily organised nominating convention at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor chose Jackson to face Republican incumbent Susan Collins, who has held the seat for decades. Jackson took the stage to a standing ovation and immediately framed the contest as a defining battle for control of the chamber.
“Thank you, Maine. In 101 days, we will defeat Susan Collins and reclaim our Senate seat. Let’s get to work,” Jackson wrote on social media following the vote.
The convention was convened after the party’s initial nominee, Graham Platner, was pressured to end his campaign over sexual misconduct allegations. His exit left Democrats scrambling to identify a replacement in a compressed timeframe, forcing an emergency process to install a new candidate before the general election.
Jackson, a progressive and a former logger from northern Maine, enters the race carrying the endorsement of party delegates who rallied behind him as a unifying figure after weeks of internal disorder.
Democrats view Maine as one of their strongest opportunities to flip a Senate seat this cycle. The state was carried by the Democratic presidential ticket in 2024, and the party sees the contest as competitive despite Collins’s long incumbency and established statewide profile.
The race joins a broader map of closely watched Senate contests shaping the balance of power in Washington. Elsewhere, well-funded campaigns have drawn significant outside money, including a high-profile donation to a Kentucky Senate bid that underscored the escalating financial stakes of the cycle.
Collins, one of the Senate’s remaining centrist Republicans, has repeatedly won re-election in a state that often splits its ballot between the two major parties. Her ability to attract crossover support has historically frustrated Democratic challengers.
