Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed a new missile and drone assault on Saudi Arabia on Saturday, targeting oil facilities in the Red Sea port towns of Jizan and Yanbu, even as the United States allowed its nearly two-week campaign of nightly strikes on Iran to lapse for the first time.
The Iran-backed group said it launched projectiles at installations linked to state oil giant Saudi Aramco, framing the operation as retaliation for earlier Saudi attacks on Houthi positions. Saudi air defences intercepted incoming ballistic missiles, and authorities briefly suspended air traffic in parts of the kingdom before conditions normalised.
There was no immediate confirmation from the Saudi government or Aramco regarding any damage to the targeted facilities.
The Houthi claim landed on the same day that Iran reported a rare reprieve. “Iran had a peaceful night,” the Iranian health ministry spokesperson, Hossein Kermanpour, wrote on X, noting the first overnight period without American strikes in two weeks.
The pause has raised fresh questions about the direction of the conflict and the calculations behind President Donald Trump’s military strategy, after a sustained run of nightly operations against Iranian targets.
The renewed exchange with Saudi Arabia signals that the confrontation is broadening beyond the direct US–Iran axis. Earlier this week, Saudi forces carried out strikes on Houthi sites in Hodeidah, prompting the group to vow retaliation against the kingdom.
Jizan and Yanbu are strategically significant, hosting energy infrastructure along shipping routes that feed global oil markets. Previous drone and missile attacks on Saudi petroleum installations have repeatedly tested the kingdom’s defences and rattled regional trade.
The Houthis have positioned themselves as a key component of Iran’s regional network, and their willingness to open a front against Saudi Arabia while Washington recalibrates its own campaign underscores the interlocking nature of the wider conflict.
Whether the halt in US strikes reflects a deliberate de-escalation, a tactical reset, or a temporary lull remains unclear. Regional tensions stay elevated, and further Houthi operations or a resumption of American action could quickly reverse Saturday’s brief calm.
