BusinessCircle Shares Climb After Acquiring Blockchain Patents From IBM

Circle Internet Group has acquired a portfolio of blockchain patents from technology giant IBM, sending shares of the stablecoin issuer higher as it moves to strengthen its intellectual property position in the digital payments sector.

The deal hands Circle a set of patents tied to blockchain and distributed-ledger technology, areas central to the company’s core business as the issuer of USDC, one of the world’s largest dollar-pegged stablecoins.

Circle’s stock gained on the news, reflecting investor optimism that the expanded patent holdings could bolster the company’s competitive standing and provide legal protection as regulatory scrutiny of the stablecoin industry intensifies.

The acquisition underscores a broader trend of established technology firms offloading blockchain-related assets while specialist crypto companies consolidate their positions. IBM has invested heavily in enterprise blockchain over the past decade before shifting much of its focus toward artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

This move comes as Circle continues to build out its infrastructure following a period of rapid growth for the stablecoin market. Patents covering payment settlement, transaction verification and ledger security are viewed as valuable strategic assets in a field where technological differentiation can be difficult to defend.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Neither company detailed the exact number of patents involved or how the technology would be integrated into Circle’s existing products.

IBM has increasingly reoriented its portfolio toward higher-growth segments, a strategy reflected in its recent acquisition of data-streaming firm Confluent as it races to expand its real-time data and AI capabilities.

For Circle, the deal arrives amid heightened competition among stablecoin issuers and growing interest from traditional financial institutions exploring tokenized payments. A stronger patent base could help the company defend its market share as new entrants and regulatory frameworks reshape the sector.

The acquisition is expected to support Circle’s long-term ambitions to position USDC as a foundational layer for digital dollar transactions. Analysts have noted that intellectual property increasingly serves as a key battleground in the evolving payments and blockchain landscape.

Further details on the patents and their commercial application are anticipated as Circle integrates the newly acquired assets into its operations in the coming months.
