“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” delivered the second-largest opening weekend in North American box office history, collecting an estimated $355 million in ticket sales and falling just short of the all-time record.
The Sony and Marvel superhero film opened just a few million dollars behind “Avengers: Endgame,” which debuted to $357 million in 2019. It comfortably surpassed the previous runner-up, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which launched to $260 million in December 2021.
The film, starring Tom Holland as the web-slinging hero, began its run with a record-setting $168 million on opening day across 4,487 theaters in the United States and Canada. That figure bested the $157 million Friday total set by “Avengers: Endgame.”
Studio projections had anticipated a $325 million opening weekend, a total that alone would have secured the second-place record. The actual haul exceeded even those optimistic forecasts.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, “Brand New Day” carried a reported production budget of $225 million, not including marketing costs. Expectations had run high, though some observers had questioned whether the film could match the mass enthusiasm of its predecessor.
The top opening weekends in North America are now led by “Avengers: Endgame” and “Brand New Day,” followed by “No Way Home,” “Avengers: Infinity War” ($257 million in 2018) and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($247 million in 2015).
Holland’s tenure as the character has been a lucrative one. “No Way Home” earned more than $1.9 billion worldwide to rank among the highest-grossing films of all time, and was the first release since the start of the pandemic to cross the $1 billion mark.
The latest triumph arrives alongside another Holland-led project. Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” which also features co-star Zendaya, slipped to second place in its third weekend with $51 million. The double presence underscores the box office pull of the film’s leads, echoing the kind of theatrical momentum last seen when Marvel titles reignited cinema attendance in recent years.
The strong debut signals continued appetite for large-scale superhero releases and positions “Brand New Day” for a potentially record-breaking global run in the weeks ahead.
