Anthropic has agreed to pay data center operator Nscale $45 billion to rent artificial intelligence computing power, according to a Bloomberg News report published on August 26. The arrangement gives the AI developer access to a large block of dedicated capacity as demand for model training and deployment climbs.
Under the deal, Anthropic will rent roughly 460 megawatts of compute capacity at an Nscale data center development in West Virginia. The figure points to one of the larger single infrastructure commitments in the sector, reflecting the scale of power now required to run advanced AI systems.
The agreement adds to a series of infrastructure moves by Anthropic as it locks in the physical capacity behind its Claude models. Training and serving frontier systems requires vast clusters of specialized chips, and access to electricity has become a limiting factor for the industry.
The company recently entered a separate arrangement worth $9.1 billion for AI compute, part of a broader push to secure long-term supply. Earlier this year Anthropic also pursued a funding round valuing the firm at around $170 billion, giving it capital to underwrite commitments of this size.
Nscale, which develops and operates data centers built for AI workloads, has been expanding its footprint to meet rising demand from model developers. The West Virginia site anchors the capacity pledged to Anthropic under the reported terms.
Anthropic and Nscale have not publicly confirmed the financial details, which were described by people familiar with the matter. The reported sum covers rental of computing power rather than an equity or acquisition transaction.
The deal reflects a wider pattern across the AI industry, where developers are signing multi-year contracts for guaranteed access to processors and power. Rising energy needs have pushed companies toward purpose-built facilities located near reliable electricity supply.
Neither company has announced a start date for operations at the West Virginia development or a completion timeline for the buildout tied to the agreement.
