Steve Ballmer, the billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, was suspended for one year by the NBA on September 2 after a league investigation concluded the franchise circumvented salary cap rules to sign Kawhi Leonard as a free agent.
The penalty ranks among the harshest in league history. Beyond the ban on Ballmer, the NBA stripped the Clippers of five first-round draft picks, leaving the team without a natural selection in the draft from 2029 through 2033. The franchise was also fined $30 million.
The investigation centred on how the Clippers courted Leonard, a two-time Finals MVP who joined the team in 2019. League rules restrict the total a franchise can spend on player salaries and bar arrangements that funnel additional compensation to players outside the cap structure.
Losing draft capital across five consecutive years hobbles the Clippers’ ability to rebuild through young talent.
