Kyiv hosted US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on Sunday for their first official Ukraine visit, one day after the pair met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow as part of a renewed effort to end the war.
The Kremlin described the Moscow discussions as useful but reported no breakthrough. Putin said Russia was making “real progress” on the battlefield and repeated Moscow’s call to address what it terms the “root causes” of the conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv was ready for a “constructive” discussion with the US representatives. The talks unfolded as both sides continued aerial attacks, with the diplomatic effort running parallel to intensified strikes.
Witkoff and Kushner had travelled to Moscow the previous day before flying to the Ukrainian capital. The back-to-back meetings mark the latest attempt to revive a peace process that has stalled repeatedly since Russia’s full-scale invasion.
The Kyiv visit is the envoys’ first to Ukraine in the current round of shuttle diplomacy. Earlier stages of the effort passed through Abu Dhabi, where US-brokered talks brought Ukrainian and Russian officials together during surges in fighting.
Moscow has held to its stated conditions for any settlement, framing the war around security demands it says must be resolved. Kyiv has pressed for terms that preserve its sovereignty. The gap between the two positions has kept negotiations short of agreement.
No joint statement followed the Kyiv meeting. Neither side announced concrete terms or a timeline for further contact.
