Fetterman called McCormick a “great friend” and pledged to “work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life right here in the Steel Valley.” The reference invoked western Pennsylvania’s industrial heritage, a recurring theme in the senator’s public messaging.
In the address, Fetterman said he would always reject “extremes and socialism,” repeating a phrase Republicans have used to describe the Democratic Party’s growing left wing. The remarks drew notice for their alignment with GOP talking points on a party stage.
The appearance is the latest instance of Fetterman parting from his party. Since his election in 2022, the senator has broken with Democratic colleagues on several issues, positioning himself as an unpredictable voice in a closely divided chamber.
McCormick, a former hedge fund executive, won his Pennsylvania Senate seat in the previous cycle. His re-election bid places him among the Republican incumbents Democrats had hoped to challenge in the midterm contest.
Fetterman’s endorsement crossed party lines in a state both parties treat as central to national contests. Pennsylvania has repeatedly decided close presidential and Senate races, and its industrial regions remain heavily contested.
The senator’s willingness to appear at an opposing party’s convention is unusual in current American politics, where crossover endorsements at official party events are rare. Other Pennsylvania Democratic primary races, such as recent nominating fights over Senate seats, have proceeded along more conventional partisan lines.
Fetterman has not indicated any change in his party affiliation. He continues to sit with Senate Democrats.
