A passenger train travelling from Kyiv to Warsaw was struck by a Russian drone two kilometres from the Polish border on Sunday, part of overnight attacks across Ukraine that killed at least six people and injured more than 40. No casualties were reported on the train.
Ukraine’s air force said overnight attacks involved more than 450 Russian drones and missiles, and that it intercepted 405 drones and four missiles. The Ukrainian General Staff said Russia launched 863 drones at Ukraine over the previous 24 hours.
Western Ukraine, usually quieter than Kyiv or the eastern front, was badly hit. The strikes triggered air-raid warnings in Poland, which borders the region. A lorry less than a kilometre from the Dorohusk-Yahodyn crossing was struck. The crossing briefly halted operations before resuming, Polish border guards said.
Russia’s defence ministry said its forces had targeted Ukrainian logistics and energy facilities and infrastructure used to move military cargo from Europe. Ukraine depends on trade and arms shipments across its Polish, Romanian and Moldovan borders.
Three people were killed in the eastern Donetsk region and a 71-year-old woman was killed in the southern Mykolaiv region. In Odesa, at least nine people were injured in a night-time attack on the Black Sea port city. Near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, two people were killed in drone strikes on fuel trucks, the head of Russia’s Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, said.
Authorities in Russia’s Tatarstan region said two people were killed and 12 injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on the city of Nizhnekamsk. Russia’s defence ministry said its forces shot down 389 Ukrainian drones during the night, including over Tatarstan and the occupied Crimean Peninsula.
Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, called the strikes “Putin’s terror knocking directly on the doors of the EU and Nato.” Poland’s foreign minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, said on X: “Putin is escalating.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said three-way negotiations between Ukraine, Russia and the United States could take place in the foreseeable future, Russian media reported.
