Celebrating a lifetime of achievement in the world of cinema, Hollywood’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that Angela Bassett and Mel Brooks will be the esteemed recipients of this year’s Academy Honorary Awards. The accolades pay tribute to the profound impact these distinguished artists have made throughout their illustrious careers.

The Academy shared the news of its decision to honor two-time Oscar nominee Angela Bassett and the acclaimed writer of “The Producers,” Mel Brooks, alongside editor Carol Littleton during its upcoming Governor Awards scheduled in November. Additionally, Michelle Satter, the founding senior director of Sundance Institute’s Artist Programs, will be bestowed with the prestigious Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

The president of the Academy, Janet Yang, expressed the board of governors’ delight at recognizing these four pioneers whose transformative work has had a significant influence on the film industry, inspiring successive generations of filmmakers and cinemagoers alike. In an official statement released on Monday, Yang remarked, “Angela Bassett, across her extensive career, has consistently delivered performances that elevate the art of acting to new levels. Mel Brooks’s humor has a remarkable ability to touch our hearts, and his rich legacy has left an indelible mark on every aspect of entertainment.”

Yang further highlighted the achievements of Carol Littleton and Michelle Satter, saying, “Carol Littleton’s exemplary career in film editing stands as a beacon for those who aspire to follow in her footsteps. Michelle Satter, a pillar of the independent film community, has significantly influenced the careers of countless filmmakers worldwide.”

Angela Bassett is celebrated for her compelling portrayal of Tina Turner in the biographical film “What’s Love Got to Do with It”, which earned her a best actress nomination. She has also shone in movies like “Waiting to Exhale” and “Black Panther”. This year, her role as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” garnered her a best supporting actress nomination.

Mel Brooks, set to turn 98 this Wednesday, embarked on his career by penning comedy skits for Sid Caesar’s television shows. His repertoire boasts films such as “The Producers”, which brought him an original screenplay Oscar, “The Twelve Chairs”, “Young Frankenstein”, and “Robin Hood: Men in Tights”.

Carol Littleton’s recognition stems from her Oscar-nominated contribution to “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial”, along with other noteworthy films like “Body Heat” and “The Manchurian Candidate”.

Satter’s work at the Sundance Institute spans over four decades, during which she has been instrumental in nurturing emerging filmmakers, especially those from under-represented communities, the Academy acknowledged.
