Cannabis consumption has found a new home on New York’s iconic Fifth Avenue, where shoppers can now purchase high-end marijuana products alongside luxury items from brands like Cartier and Saks. In the 3½ years since New York state legalized adult-use marijuana, licensed cannabis sales have flourished, surpassing $100 million last year. As the state cracks down on unlicensed shops, legal dispensaries are making their mark in upscale markets, offering a blend of luxury and legality.
The Travel Agency, a recreational marijuana dispensary on Fifth Avenue, exemplifies this trend. With sleek white interiors, glass cabinetry, and knowledgeable “budtenders,” the store fits seamlessly among its high-end neighbors. Founder Paul Yau, who also operates locations in Union Square and Downtown Brooklyn, has plans to open a fourth store in SoHo. The Travel Agency offers a range of products, from $3.50 THC seltzers to premium flower priced at $150 per ounce, with the average purchase around $80 to $90.
Yau emphasizes that while the elegant atmosphere draws in customers, the store’s ethical mission keeps them coming back. The Union Square location donates 51% of its proceeds to the Doe Fund, which helps formerly incarcerated individuals reintegrate into society. Similarly, the Fifth Avenue and Brooklyn stores are managed by individuals with past justice system involvement related to cannabis.
The store’s design is aimed at appealing to both long-time users and the “canna-curious” — new consumers interested in exploring the legal market. Yau notes that the 40-year-old female demographic is particularly strong, with the store’s inviting environment easing their entry into cannabis consumption.
Brands like Cann, a THC seltzer company, are also targeting this emerging market. With a focus on approachability, Cann offers pastel-colored cans containing just 2 milligrams of THC, priced at $49.95 for a 12-pack. The brand, backed by celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, is positioning itself as an alternative to alcohol, appealing to premium, millennial consumers.
Luxury cannabis extends beyond just products. Designer Jonathan Adler offers marijuana-themed home decor, while actor Seth Rogen’s Houseplant brand sells high-end accessories like marble rolling trays and ashtrays. These items, often found at boutiques and dispensaries like The Travel Agency, cater to the upscale cannabis user.
As the cannabis industry continues to grow, Yau believes partnerships with fashion brands and other luxury retailers will become more common, further embedding cannabis into the fabric of New York’s high-end retail landscape. With the legal market still in its early stages, dispensaries like The Travel Agency are at the forefront of this burgeoning industry, offering a sophisticated shopping experience that merges style with substance.
