ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok and Douyin, is increasing its investments in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies, with a particular focus on video-generation tools. CEO Liang Rubo outlined the company’s strategic objectives for the fourth quarter, emphasizing the expansion of GenAI applications and reinforcing efforts in key verticals, according to an internal memo.
The Beijing-based tech giant operates several AI-driven products, including the Doubao AI chatbot in China and its international equivalent, Cici. It also offers advanced AI video tools such as Jimeng AI, video models PixelDance and Seaweed, and the video editor Jianying, known overseas as CapCut. Despite Doubao’s success, with nearly 60 million monthly active users, ByteDance has identified AI video generation as a more lucrative growth area.
A prominent tech blogger, Ma Nan, noted that while ByteDance is prioritizing video-generation tools, it hasn’t reached a development limit in conversational AI. Instead, the company appears to be focusing on long-term research and exploratory innovation, a goal aligned with Liang’s vision to build a research-oriented organization in GenAI.
ByteDance is also leveraging its top talent pool to drive innovation. It recently upgraded Doubao with new features like audio chats and image editing. The company has been attracting leading experts in the field, including hires from rival AI firms. ByteDance is also making a significant presence at the Annual Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS), aiming to recruit global talent.
Video-generation tools such as Jianying and Jimeng are a focal point for ByteDance, partly due to leadership by Kelly Zhang Nan, who shifted her focus to video editing after stepping down as Douyin’s CEO. These tools are essential as ByteDance positions itself in the competitive AI video market, especially with the upcoming launch of OpenAI’s Sora video model, which has spurred competition among Chinese tech companies.
ByteDance’s strategic approach includes deploying AI across a range of applications tailored to specific demographics. Its offerings span chatbots, video and image generation, edtech, office tools, and automated coding. This diversified strategy has earned ByteDance the nickname “App Factory,” as it continues to strengthen its role as a leader in AI innovation.
