DeepSeek’s AI Breakthrough Shakes Global Markets

BusinessDeepSeek’s AI Breakthrough Shakes Global Markets

In 2022, under the pseudonym “an ordinary little pig,” the founder of AI start-up DeepSeek quietly donated 138 million yuan (US$19 million) to Chinese charities. The alias, inspired by Wang Xiaobo’s dark-humor short story A Maverick Pig, concealed the identity of Liang Wenfeng, a financier whose quantum trading firm, High-Flyer Quant, was under increasing regulatory scrutiny.

That same year, High-Flyer Quant was caught in a controversy surrounding a sudden market decline. Rumors spread that a coordinated sell-off by quant trading firms had triggered the downturn. In response, High-Flyer publicly denied involvement, asserting that no such market manipulation had taken place.

Three years later, Liang’s AI venture, DeepSeek, would make global headlines—not for financial speculation, but for its groundbreaking advancements in artificial intelligence. On January 27, the release of DeepSeek’s R1 reasoning model triggered a seismic shift in the tech sector. Just weeks after unveiling its V3 large language model (LLM), DeepSeek’s R1 model rivaled the capabilities of OpenAI’s top offerings at a fraction of the cost.

The impact was immediate and far-reaching. A massive sell-off wiped out nearly US$1 trillion in tech stocks, including a staggering US$600 billion loss for Nvidia alone. Investors suddenly questioned the lofty valuations of major AI and semiconductor companies, whose dominance had been based on assumptions of high computational costs and limited alternatives.

DeepSeek’s rapid rise from a hedge fund spin-off to a leader in AI innovation underscores the shifting landscape of the global technology race. While US firms have long held an edge in AI and semiconductor development, China’s advancements in cost-effective, high-performance models could redefine the industry.

As the dust settles, questions remain about the long-term implications of DeepSeek’s technology. Will it democratize AI, making it more accessible and affordable? Or will it lead to further volatility in global markets? One thing is certain—DeepSeek has proven itself as a formidable player in the AI revolution, with the power to challenge industry giants and reshape the future of artificial intelligence.
