Disney Announces New Theme Park Resort in Abu Dhabi

BusinessDisney Announces New Theme Park Resort in Abu Dhabi

The Walt Disney Company has unveiled plans for a new theme park and resort in Abu Dhabi, marking its seventh global theme park destination. Developed in partnership with immersive experiences company Miral, the upcoming project will be located on Yas Island, a vibrant hub for entertainment and tourism in the United Arab Emirates. While Miral will fully finance and build the resort, Disney’s imagineers will lead the creative design and oversee operations. Disney will earn royalties from the venture but will not invest capital.

This development is separate from the $60 billion that Disney has allocated for investment in its theme parks over the next decade. Company executives highlighted that this project aligns with Disney’s strategy to expand its “experiences” division, which encompasses theme parks, resorts, cruises, and consumer products. In fiscal year 2024, this segment contributed 37% of Disney’s total revenue and nearly 60% of its operating income, reflecting its growing importance to the company’s bottom line.

Disney began considering the UAE as a viable destination for expansion several years ago, citing its rich cultural appreciation for the arts and creativity. Although initial interest started as early as 2017 or 2018, progress was delayed due to the pandemic and leadership changes. The UAE’s strategic location played a key role in the decision, with approximately one-third of the global population residing within a four-hour flight of the region. The local tourism market, with an estimated reach of 500 million people, offers significant growth potential.

The new park promises to be the most technologically advanced and interactive in Disney’s global portfolio. It will integrate the company’s signature storytelling with cutting-edge design and the unique cultural and architectural essence of Abu Dhabi. Guests can expect themed accommodations, distinctive dining options, and immersive retail experiences. Set along a picturesque waterfront, the park’s layout will provide a platform for storytelling in innovative and modern ways.

Yas Island is already home to several major attractions including Ferrari World, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld, and the Yas Marina F1 Circuit. The addition of a Disney resort further strengthens its position as a premier global destination. Disney’s new venture is set to welcome a broader and more diverse audience, extending the magic of Disney to millions more families across the globe.
