Activist investor Starboard Value has taken a stake in Shake Shack, marking the hedge fund’s latest push into the restaurant sector as it seeks to influence strategy at the fast-casual burger chain.

Shake Shack, founded in New York and known for its premium burgers and shakes, has expanded rapidly in recent years, growing its store count in the United States and internationally. The move positions Starboard to potentially advocate for changes as the chain navigates a competitive dining landscape.

Starboard is no stranger to the food and beverage industry. The firm previously built positions in french fry supplier Lamb Weston and coffee giant Starbucks, where it pushed for improvements in performance and shareholder returns.

The fund has also pursued campaigns well beyond restaurants, including efforts to dismantle the dual-class share structure at News Corp and a stake in consumer health company Kenvue.

The disclosure comes as fast-casual dining chains face renewed scrutiny from investors amid slowing sales growth and shifting consumer spending patterns across the sector.

Activist campaigns typically unfold over months, with the investor engaging management privately before any public demands. Whether Starboard will seek board representation or push for a broader overhaul at Shake Shack is not yet clear.

Shake Shack and Starboard Value have not publicly commented on the reported stake. The company’s next earnings report and any formal engagement between the two parties will offer clearer signals on the direction of the campaign.
