BusinessPeter Thiel Buys 1% Stake in Argentina's Vista Energy, Worth $118 Million

Billionaire investor Peter Thiel has acquired a roughly 1% stake in Vista Energy, the Argentine oil and gas producer operating in the country’s prolific Vaca Muerta shale formation, according to a regulatory filing.

The holding, valued at approximately $118 million, marks a notable bet on Argentina’s expanding energy sector by one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent financiers. Vista Energy has emerged as one of the fastest-growing producers in the Vaca Muerta basin, which ranks among the world’s largest reserves of shale oil and gas.

Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal and Palantir Technologies, is best known for his technology investments and early backing of Facebook. The Vista stake signals a broader diversification into commodities and emerging-market energy assets.

Vaca Muerta, located in Argentina’s Neuquen province, has attracted rising international interest as production has scaled up in recent years. The formation is central to Argentina’s ambitions to become a net energy exporter and to strengthen its foreign-currency reserves through crude and liquefied natural gas shipments.

Vista Energy’s shares have surged over the past year as output climbed and global demand for shale supply remained firm. The company, led by former YPF executives, produces primarily from Vaca Muerta and has expanded its drilling operations across multiple blocks.

The investment lands as global capital continues flowing toward energy infrastructure and resource plays. Large investors have increasingly paired technology holdings with energy exposure, a trend visible in recent moves such as the multibillion-dollar push into data-center power supply led by major asset managers.

Argentina’s energy prospects have improved amid economic reforms aimed at attracting foreign investment and lifting currency controls that had long deterred capital inflows. Rising Vaca Muerta output has been a rare bright spot for the economy.

The stake positions Thiel among a growing roster of foreign investors seeking a foothold in the basin. Whether the position reflects a long-term commitment or a tactical allocation remains unclear, though the scale underscores confidence in the formation’s growth trajectory.

Vista Energy has not commented publicly on the filing. The company is expected to report continued production gains as new wells come online across its Vaca Muerta acreage in the coming quarters.
