When whispers about the infiltration of artificial intelligence (AI) began echoing through Nigeria’s vibrant music corridors, Eclipse Nkasi, a seasoned music producer, felt an impending sense of obsolescence. The bustling streets of Lagos had always reverberated with traditional music-making methods. Yet, technology’s unrelenting march threatened to disrupt this age-old symphony.
But instead of retreating into the shadows, Nkasi, with an insightful lens, discerned the immense potential AI held. He realized that if channeled correctly, this new wave could invigorate the music scene rather than diminish it.
Historically, producing an Afrobeats album involved arduous processes. From composing intricate tracks, hiring a slew of musicians, intensive recording sessions, to mastering tracks in a sophisticated studio – the journey was both time-consuming and capital-intensive. Nkasi’s endeavors typically took up to three months and drained thousands of dollars.
Enter AI, and this scenario underwent a dramatic transformation.
Together with a trio of innovative friends, Nkasi tapped into the power of OpenAI’s ChatGPT program. They embarked on an experimental journey to craft a unique nine-track album titled “Infinite Echoes”. With the AI’s assistance, song titles and lyrics flowed seamlessly, giving birth to tracks like “God Whispers”, “Love Tempo”, and “Dream Chaser”. While the technology laid the foundation, the team added their creative touch, refining the lyrics to resonate with their chosen narrative: the relentless pursuit of an artist fueled by undying passion.
The magic of AI wasn’t limited to lyrics. Nkasi employed another tool for tune generation, and when he lent his voice for the vocals, yet another sophisticated software morphed his voice, birthing the album’s enigmatic virtual vocalist, Mya Blue. This AI-generated singer, portrayed as a mesmerizing computer animation, resonates with fans in the digital realm.
Lagos’s music critic, Omotolani Alake, acknowledges this technological revolution. AI’s integration, she observes, can significantly elevate production quality, introducing groundbreaking techniques to traditional processes. However, this digital age brings its own set of challenges. The realm of copyrights remains murky, and the industry must tread carefully to navigate the evolving landscape.
Eclipse Nkasi’s journey exemplifies the harmonious fusion of tradition and technology. By embracing change and harnessing AI’s capabilities, Nigeria’s music industry stands on the cusp of a new era, one that celebrates both its rich past and its promising future.
