BusinessOpenAI Tells Staff July Revenue Outpaced Entire Second Quarter Amid Rising AI Rivalry

OpenAI has informed employees that its annualized revenue in July surpassed the total generated across all of the second quarter, a sign of accelerating growth as the company faces mounting competition from rivals.

The disclosure came from Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar in an internal message aimed at reassuring staff that the business remains robust. The message underscored the pace at which demand for the company’s artificial intelligence products has expanded.

“Annualized revenue in July topped all of Q2,” Friar told employees, according to CNBC. The figure reflects a run rate rather than a single month’s earnings, projecting current performance across a full year.

The reassurance arrives as OpenAI navigates an increasingly crowded market. Competition has intensified from Anthropic, a well-funded rival focused on enterprise AI, alongside a growing field of open-source developers offering alternatives to OpenAI’s proprietary models.

Open-source models, which allow developers to freely access and modify underlying code, have emerged as a challenge to companies that charge for access to their systems. Their proliferation has raised questions about long-term pricing power across the sector.

OpenAI’s revenue trajectory has climbed steadily since the launch of ChatGPT, driven by consumer subscriptions, enterprise contracts, and developers building applications on its programming interfaces. The company has been scaling infrastructure aggressively to keep pace with demand.

That expansion has required vast capital. The company has pursued substantial funding rounds to fuel its ambitions, while also striking major agreements to secure computing capacity and specialized hardware.

This development comes as investors and industry observers scrutinize whether AI companies can convert rapid revenue growth into sustainable profitability, given the enormous costs of training and running large models.

OpenAI has not published detailed financial statements, and the internal figures shared with staff have not been independently verified. The company remains privately held, limiting public visibility into its finances.

The internal messaging strategy signals an effort to maintain morale and retention as competitors court AI talent with lucrative offers. Retaining top researchers and engineers has become a central battleground in the industry.

The coming quarters are expected to test whether OpenAI can sustain its growth momentum while managing costs and defending market share against both established rivals and open-source alternatives.
