Advanced Micro Devices has acquired Taalas, a startup that hardwires artificial intelligence models directly into silicon, in a move that deepens the chipmaker’s push into the fast-growing AI inference market.
Taalas has developed a novel approach that etches AI models into custom hardware rather than running them on general-purpose processors. The technique promises significant gains in speed and energy efficiency, two of the most pressing concerns for companies deploying AI at scale.
The startup’s current chip runs a scaled-down version of Meta’s Llama 3.1 language model. Taalas is developing successors designed to accommodate larger and more sophisticated models as demand for AI processing continues to surge across data centers worldwide.
The acquisition underscores AMD’s strategy of expanding beyond its traditional strengths in central and graphics processors to compete more directly in specialized AI silicon. Inference — the process of running trained AI models to produce outputs such as text, images, or predictions — has emerged as a critical battleground.
