BusinessSanDisk Stock Slides as Memory-Chip Selloff Tests AI Rally

SanDisk shares fell sharply in trading this week, extending a downturn across the memory-chip sector even as the company positions itself as a key supplier for artificial-intelligence infrastructure.

The decline came amid renewed investor caution toward semiconductor stocks, which have rallied strongly this year on expectations of surging demand for data-center memory. That optimism has recently collided with concerns over stretched valuations and the durability of AI-driven spending.

SanDisk, spun off from Western Digital as a standalone flash-storage company, has become a closely watched barometer of the memory market. Its NAND flash products are central to solid-state storage used in servers, laptops, and increasingly in AI systems that require rapid access to vast datasets.

The company has argued that AI workloads represent a structural tailwind for its business. Training and running large AI models demand enormous storage capacity and high-speed data throughput, a shift that SanDisk contends will lift demand for high-performance flash memory over the coming years.

Earlier momentum had propelled the stock higher, with the company drawing attention after it laid out ambitious growth targets stretching to 2030. A substantial order backlog and firming NAND pricing had reinforced the bullish case among investors betting on an AI-fueled memory upcycle.

Yet the same enthusiasm has left memory stocks vulnerable to swings in sentiment. Sharp gains earlier in the year prompted questions over whether valuations had run ahead of fundamentals, and any wobble in the broader chip complex tends to hit recently high-flying names hardest.

The memory market has also proved historically cyclical, with periods of tight supply and rising prices often followed by gluts and steep corrections. Investors weighing SanDisk’s long-term AI opportunity against that volatility have shown little tolerance for setbacks.

Rival memory makers have faced similar turbulence, underscoring that the pressure is sector-wide rather than specific to SanDisk. Shifts in pricing forecasts, inventory levels, and data-center capital spending have repeatedly moved the group in unison.

Whether SanDisk can convert its AI narrative into sustained financial results remains the central question for shareholders. The company continues to point to expanding storage requirements from AI as a durable source of demand, but near-term share performance is likely to track the broader mood toward semiconductor valuations.
