The Journey of a Cambodian Student in China: Exploring Opportunities and Cultivating Skills to Contribute to a Brighter Future in Cambodia

ChinaThe Journey of a Cambodian Student in China: Exploring Opportunities and Cultivating Skills to Contribute to a Brighter Future in Cambodia

Tim Chivorn, a 24-year-old Cambodian student at Kunming University of Science and Technology, is pursuing a major in electrical automation with the goal of contributing to the development of Cambodia’s electricity infrastructure. His passion for his homeland inspired his graduation project, a miniature model of a hydropower station that he designed to operate in the mountainous region of Battambang in western Cambodia. Chivorn believes that the hydropower station could solve the problem of electricity shortage in the area, which has severely impacted the daily lives of the people.

Chivorn’s interest in the electricity infrastructure of Cambodia stems from his childhood experiences in Battambang. He shared that during his youth, it was customary for locals to start working at sunrise and rest at sunset because the area’s electricity supply was inadequate. Frequent blackouts were a regular occurrence, causing significant disruptions to people’s lives. These early experiences motivated Chivorn to pursue an education in electrical automation with the goal of contributing to the development of Cambodia’s electricity infrastructure.

Chivorn’s graduation project is a manifestation of his dreams and aspirations. He hopes that the hydropower station model he designed will serve as a blueprint for real-world development projects that could provide electricity to the people of Battambang. His ultimate goal is to make a positive impact on the lives of people in his home province and contribute to the overall progress and development of Cambodia.

Tim Chivorn’s childhood memories of power outages in his hometown of Battambang, Cambodia, have had a lasting impact on him. “Every time when there was a power outage, the city would be plunged into darkness,” he recalls. The experience left a deep impression on him and ignited his determination to provide uninterrupted access to electricity for the people of his hometown.

Despite the challenges facing Battambang’s electricity infrastructure, Chivorn was determined to make a positive impact. He began to explore ways in which he could contribute to the development of his homeland’s electricity infrastructure. China, through its Belt and Road Initiative, provided the answer. Over the years, China has helped Cambodia build several hydropower stations, such as the Kamchay Hydropower Station and the Lower Sesan II hydropower station, which have been instrumental in mitigating Cambodia’s electricity crisis.

For Chivorn, these hydropower stations represent a source of hope for the future of Cambodia’s electricity infrastructure. Inspired by China’s investment in Cambodia’s electricity infrastructure, Chivorn began to pursue a major in electrical automation at Kunming University of Science and Technology. He hopes to leverage his education to develop new solutions that can further improve Cambodia’s access to electricity.

While hydropower stations have brought light to Battambang, Chivorn recognizes that they require considerable human effort to manage and maintain. As a result, he is keen to learn more about the latest technological advancements in the field of electrical automation to help reduce the workload and make the management of hydropower stations more efficient.

Tim Chivorn’s dream of lighting up his hometown has begun to take shape, thanks to the assistance of China. However, he recognizes that there is still much work to be done to ensure a sustainable and stable power supply for his community. As a result, he is more determined than ever to gain the practical skills and knowledge needed to contribute to the development of Cambodia’s electricity infrastructure.

In 2018, Chivorn moved to Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province in southwest China, on a scholarship to pursue higher studies. Despite the challenges he faces as a foreign student, Chivorn is excited to learn and apply his knowledge to improve the lives of people in his hometown.

For Chivorn, the warmth and hospitality of Kunming bear a striking resemblance to his hometown of Battambang. The familiar atmosphere of the city has made it easier for him to adjust to life in China and focus on his studies.

However, pursuing a degree in electrical engineering as a foreign student in China is not without its difficulties. In addition to the complex concepts he must master, Chivorn must also overcome the language barrier. This adds another layer of challenge to his academic journey, but he remains undaunted in his pursuit of his goals.

Tim Chivorn faced a daunting challenge when he first arrived in China, as he struggled to understand the academic terminology due to the lack of corresponding Chinese words in the Khmer language. Despite these difficulties, he was determined to learn and quickly began filling his notebook with meticulously labeled notes, including Chinese terms with phonetic symbols and detailed explanations.

As Chivorn progressed through his studies, he continued to explore the connection between light and electricity, working on projects ranging from small light bulbs to models of hydropower stations. His graduation project, a miniature model of a hydropower station, was designed with the geographical location and topography of Battambang in mind, which Chivorn hoped would be an effective solution to the area’s electricity shortage.

Chivorn was determined to make his model a reality, and sought the help of his seniors to conduct field research and used relevant references from the design and operational data of a hydropower station built in Battambang with Chinese aid. Through his hard work and dedication, Chivorn was able to create a design that he believes will one day provide a stable and uninterrupted flow of electricity to his hometown and the rest of Cambodia.

His vision and persistence is a testament to the power of education and the potential impact that can be made by individuals who are committed to improving the lives of those around them. His work serves as an inspiration for others who share his passion for building a better future, and his determination to make a difference will undoubtedly continue to shape the course of his life and the lives of those he seeks to help.

Through his perseverance and hard work, Chivorn is setting an example for other young people in Cambodia who aspire to improve their communities. By gaining the practical skills and knowledge needed to contribute to the development of Cambodia’s electricity infrastructure, he hopes to make a lasting impact on the lives of people in his hometown and beyond.

Chivorn’s dedication to improving the lives of his fellow citizens through the development of Cambodia’s electricity infrastructure is a testament to the power of education and the potential of international cooperation. By leveraging his education and drawing on the expertise of China, he hopes to make a lasting impact on the lives of people in his hometown and beyond.

Chivorn’s journey as a Cambodian student in China highlights the importance of education and the potential of international cooperation. By pursuing an education in electrical automation in China, Chivorn is cultivating the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to the development of Cambodia’s electricity infrastructure. His experiences in China have equipped him with the tools necessary to tackle the challenges facing his homeland, and his story serves as a powerful example of the potential of education to drive progress and create positive change.
